A 57-year-old man in Hanoi is recovering after a life-saving surgery that required the amputation of one-third of his right arm due to a severe infection from Vibrio vulnificus. Known colloquially as "flesh-eating bacteria," the pathogen caused the patient to fall into critical condition within days of his initial symptoms. According to Dr. Dinh Van Ba of Military Hospital 103, the man arrived with septic shock and a rapidly spreading infection that moved from his thumb across his entire hand, necessitating the emergency procedure to halt the necrosis.

While the exact source of the man's infection remains a mystery, his medical history played a significant role in the severity of the case. Doctors noted that his existing conditions—type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and chronic gout—made him particularly vulnerable to the bacterium's aggressive nature. To stabilize him, the medical team utilized a combination of mechanical ventilation, continuous blood filtration, and high-strength antibiotics following the surgery.

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that naturally inhabits warm saltwater and estuarine environments. It typically enters the human body through open wounds exposed to seawater or through the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood, especially oysters. Once the infection takes hold, it can destroy healthy tissue with terrifying speed, often leading to sepsis. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates a mortality rate of approximately 20%, with some fatalities occurring within only 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Medical experts emphasize that individuals with liver disease, compromised immune systems, or iron overload disorders are at the highest risk for life-threatening complications. To prevent such infections, the public is strongly advised to cook all shellfish thoroughly and avoid handling raw seafood if they have any breaks in their skin.

Given the rapid progression of this specific bacterium, doctors urge anyone who experiences intense pain, swelling, or skin darkening after contact with seawater to seek emergency care immediately. Early intervention is often the only way to avoid permanent limb loss or death, as the window for effective treatment closes quickly once the bacteria begins to spread through the soft tissue.
