The city of Detroit is trying to get Sidney Powell banned from court for her conspiracy theory election lawsuits

The City of Detroit is trying to get Sidney Powell banned from practicing law in the state of Michigan, saying her falsehood-filled lawsuits seeking to overturn the election undermined "people's faith in the democratic process and their trust in government."

"Plaintiffs and their counsel understood that the mere filing of a suit (no matter how frivolous) could, without any evidence, raise doubts in the minds of millions of Americans about the legitimacy of the 2020 election," city attorneys wrote in a motion obtained by Law & Crime.

The motion, which has not yet been filed, could trigger a sanctions process for Powell. It asks the judge to ban her from practicing law in the state and to refer her to the state bar for grievance proceedings, which could result in future sanctions, including disbarment.

In a statement provided to Insider, Powell dismissed the action, saying, "we will continue to seek the truth and expose the fraud."

Powell was kicked off President Donald Trump's legal team in late November and has since then filed four lawsuits on her own trying to overturn the election results and disqualify millions of votes.

Her lawsuits, filed in Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Arizona, were premised on a conspiracy theory that voting software tied to the now-dead Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was used to switch votes from President-elect Joe Biden to Trump.

They cited a range of affidavits, including an anonymous "military intelligence analyst" called "Spider" (or sometimes "Spyder") who later revealed to the Washington Post that he didn't have the experience he claimed. Other "experts" cited election results in counties that did not exist and mixed up data in Michigan and Minnesota.

All of the lawsuits have been rejected by judges and failed upon numerous appeals. Powell continues to raise money off the failed lawsuits.

Legal ethics experts previously told Insider that Powell was "playing with fire" with her conspiracy theorizing lawsuits, and was at risk of disbarment.

"Filing a lawsuit that has no basis in law and in fact is not permissible," Jan Jacobowitz, the director of the Professional Responsibility and Ethics Program at the University of Miami School of Law, previously told Insider. "Being dishonest is not permissible. Misrepresenting is not permissible. Filing on behalf of a client who didn't consent is actionable."

In a separate election case, lawyers for Detroit also asked a judge in Wayne County to sanction the attorneys representing the Election Integrity Fund and Thomas More Society, two right-wing organizations also trying to overturn the election results, according to Law & Crime.

"This is not a legitimate lawsuit; it is a public relations weapon being used to advance the false narrative that our democratic system is broken," the motion, filed Tuesday, read. "This abuse of our legal system deserves the strongest possible sanctions."

Both of those lawsuits failed. Biden beat Trump by more than 150,000 votes in Michigan more than a month ago, securing 16 of his 306 electoral college votes. Not a single election lawsuit brought by Trump and his allies since the election has succeeded in court.
