Cơ quan thuế vụ bang New York cáo buộc Tổng thống Mỹ Donald Trump đã nhận từ bố mẹ hơn 400 triệu đô la, mà một phần đã có được nhờ "trốn thuế", sau khi cơ quan này đã mở một cuộc điều tra về các thông tin trên, khiến tai tiếng mới này có nguy cơ làm sứt mẻ hình ảnh về nhà tỷ phú Donald Trump thường nêu lên tay trắng làm nên sự nghiệp.

Theo ông James Gazzale, phát ngôn viên cơ quan thuế vụ New York, cơ quan này xác nhận việc mở điều tra về những cáo buộc trong bài phóng sự điều tra của báo New York Times và kiên quyết xem xét mọi đầu mối.
Theo ghi nhận của thông tín viên Eric de Salve từ San Francisco, tai tiếng mới này có nguy cơ làm sứt mẻ hình ảnh về mình, mà nhà tỷ phú Donald Trump thường nêu lên, theo đó ông là người tay trắng làm nên sự nghiệp.
Donald Trump thích tự phô trương mình là hiện thân của huyền thoại về người Mỹ tự lập, không hề, hay gần như không hề dựa vào tài sản cha mình để lại. Thông tin của tờ New York Times là một cú đánh mạnh vào câu chuyện có mục tiêu chính trị đó.
Theo tờ báo, ngay từ khi mới 3 tuổi, cậu bé Donald Trump đã kiếm được 200.000 đô la một năm. Đến khi 8 tuổi, cậu đã là một triệu phú. Ở tuổi 40, ông nhận được 5 triệu đô la mỗi năm từ cha mình là Fred Trump, cũng là một ông trùm đầu tư bất động sản ở New York.
Trên truyền hình, trong các quyển sách của mình và nhân các cuộc mít tinh, tổng thống Mỹ luôn nhắc đi nhắc lại rằng ông đã xây dựng đế chế của riêng mình với một khoản tiền một triệu đô la vay của cha mình và sau đó đã trả lại. Thực tế, theo tờ New York Times, thì vào những năm 1970, ông Trump đã khởi nghiệp với 140 triệu đô la của người cha, một món tiền ông chưa từng hoàn trả. Tổng cộng Donald Trump nhận được 413 triệu đô la từ tài sản của gia đình.
Thế nhưng chính nguồn gốc đáng ngờ của khối tài sản khổng lồ đó mới đặt ra nhiều câu hỏi nhiều nhất. Theo tờ báo, tiền đến từ một công ty bình phong, được lập ra để hưởng lợi từ các khoản khấu trừ thuế lớn, nhờ gian lận. Thủ thuật tài chánh bất hợp pháp đó cho phép ông Trump cùng các anh chị em của ông chỉ phải trả 52 triệu đô la tiền thuế, thay vì hơn 550 triệu.
Nhà Trắng đã phản ứng bằng tuyên bố rằng câu chuyện là một « Cuộc tấn công dữ dội từ một tờ New York Times suy tàn ».
Cuộc điều tra của báo New York Times kéo dài 18 tháng, dựa trên 100.000 trang tài liệu nội bộ, và trích dẫn 200 tờ khai thuế.

But Fred Trump foiled the attempt, as he feared his son could strip his estate and use it to rescue his own failing businesses, The Times reported, citing depositions and other documents it obtained.
Donald Trump had sent his father a document that would make him the sole executor of the estate and protect his portion of his inheritance from creditors and his impending divorce settlement, according to the report.
Fred Trump, then 85, had not seen the document before but was instructed to sign immediately, The Times reported. He saw the move as an attempt to go behind his back.
He showed the document to his daughter Maryanne Trump Barry, a federal judge at the time. She recalled in her deposition that he told her, "This doesn't pass the smell test," The Times reported.
Then Fred Trump had lawyers draft new documents stripping his son of sole control of the estate. Notes from those lawyers cited by The Times show that Fred Trump's instructions were to "protect assets from DJT, Donald's creditors."

The allegations are included in an investigation published Tuesday by The Times, which said it reviewed thousands of tax documents and financial records. It found that Donald Trump received at least $413 million in today's dollars from his father and that the president and his family engaged in "instances of outright fraud" to enhance their wealth.
The Times reported that Donald Trump was earning $200,000 annually in today's dollars from his father's empire by the time he was 3 years old. By age 8, he was a millionaire, the report said.
The investigation appears to refute the president's narrative that he is a self-made billionaire who built his own empire.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance told Business Insider in an email that officials were reviewing the allegations in the report and "vigorously pursuing all appropriate avenues of investigation."
