343 Vietnamese arrested after Cambodia dismantles scam ring in border casino

The dismantling of a massive transnational cyberscam ring has led to the arrest of more than 300 Vietnamese nationals following their repatriation from Cambodia. This operation, detailed by police on Sunday, highlights the growing crackdown on a multibillion-dollar illicit industry that has taken root across Southeast Asia.

On Friday, Vietnamese authorities officially arrested 343 individuals on charges of internet fraud. These suspects were part of a larger group of nearly 400 people handed over by Cambodian officials on March 17, all of whom were allegedly linked to a sophisticated criminal network recently disrupted across the border.

The scale of the deportation appears even larger than the initial arrest figures suggest. According to Cambodia’s immigration department, a total of 776 Vietnamese nationals suspected of involvement in online fraud were sent back to Vietnam during the March 17 operation.

Investigations by the Dong Nai police reveal that the syndicate operated out of a casino in Poipet, a Cambodian city situated on the Thai border. From this base, the group utilized platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook to target vulnerable populations, specifically focusing on the elderly and those with limited technical literacy.

While the exact amount stolen by this specific ring remains undisclosed, the financial impact of such crimes is staggering. In a separate case in January, Vietnamese police detained 35 individuals accused of defrauding victims of $350 million through advanced technology and online gambling schemes.

The broader context of these arrests paints a grim picture of the region's security. Rights monitors and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime note that tens of thousands of people—some willing participants and others victims of human trafficking—are currently working in fortified compounds and "scam centers" throughout Cambodia.

The human and financial toll in Vietnam has reached a crisis point. Official data indicates that since 2020, Vietnamese citizens have lost approximately $1.5 billion across more than 24,000 recorded cases of internet fraud.

This recent joint operation between Cambodia and Vietnam is part of an intensifying regional effort to combat these hubs. These criminal organizations are known for global "pig butchering" scams, lure victims into fake romantic relationships or fraudulent cryptocurrency investments, and steal tens of billions of dollars annually on a global scale.
