8 countries offering cash incentives to attract new residents

Several countries across Europe and Asia are now offering significant financial incentives to combat rural depopulation and aging demographics. From direct cash grants to housing subsidies and business support, these programs aim to attract a new generation of residents, particularly as the rise of digital nomadism makes remote relocation more feasible.

In Italy, the southern region of Calabria is offering up to 30,000 euros to individuals under 40 who move to villages with fewer than 2,000 residents to start a business. This follows the country's famous "one-euro home" schemes, both of which are responses to a birth rate that hit a record low in 2024. Similarly, the Swiss village of Albinen offers families roughly 25,000 Swiss francs per adult, though participants must commit to a 10-year stay and invest in local property.

Asian and Mediterranean nations are also implementing aggressive strategies. Japan provides grants of up to 1 million yen per child for families moving from major cities to rural areas to reverse depopulation trends. Meanwhile, Greece is focusing on the island of Antikythera, offering housing and monthly stipends to families to offset projections that the national population could drop by 20% by 2050.

In Northern Europe, Ireland has launched the "Our Living Islands" initiative, which provides substantial grants of up to 84,000 euros specifically for the renovation of vacant or derelict homes on remote islands. Spain and Croatia are also active in this space, with the latter offering to cover 50% of property purchase costs in certain regions while simultaneously catering to remote workers through dedicated digital nomad permits.

Unlike most programs that focus on residential settlement, Chile has taken a more entrepreneurial approach. Its "Start-Up Chile" program provides up to $80,000 in equity-free funding and mentorship to founders willing to build their companies within the country. While these incentives are enticing, experts warn that they often come with strict conditions, such as multi-year residency commitments or mandatory property renovations, and payments are typically distributed over time rather than as a single upfront sum.
