11 foreigners face caning in Singapore after overstaying their visas

In a significant joint operation, Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) arrested eleven Nepalese men for overstaying their visit passes and working illegally. The crackdown, which took place on March 10, 2026, targeted several food and beverage outlets suspected of employing immigration offenders. The suspects, aged between 21 and 43, now face severe legal consequences under Singapore’s strict migration and labor laws.

The penalties for overstaying in Singapore are among the most stringent in the world. If convicted, these individuals face up to six months in prison and a mandatory minimum of three strokes of the cane. In addition to physical punishment and jail time, offenders are typically deported and permanently barred from re-entering the country once their sentences are served.

The investigation has also expanded to include those who facilitated the illegal employment. Two Singaporean men are currently under investigation for allegedly hiring some of the offenders, while several work permit and S Pass holders are being scrutinized for potential labor violations. Under Singaporean law, employers who hire illegal immigrants face mandatory jail time of at least six months and significant fines, reflecting the government's zero-tolerance approach to unauthorized labor.

This raid marks the second major immigration enforcement action in Singapore within a single month, following a similar operation in the Hougang area on March 3 that led to the arrest of 14 individuals. Authorities have reiterated that both "knowing" and "negligent" harboring of immigration offenders carry heavy penalties, including imprisonment and fines, to ensure that all residents and businesses rigorously verify the legal status of foreign workers.

Beyond immediate criminal charges, businesses found in violation of the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act risk fines of up to S$30,000 per charge and may be permanently banned from hiring foreign staff. These high-stakes consequences serve as a stark reminder for the food and beverage industry to maintain strict compliance with work pass regulations as authorities continue their intensified surveillance of the sector.
