A group of nearly two dozen robbers orchestrated a high-speed heist at Kumar Jewelers, an Indian-American-owned business in Fremont, California, escaping with approximately $1.7 million in merchandise. According to surveillance footage recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice, the entire operation lasted a mere 70 seconds. The gang, dressed in dark hoodies and masks, moved with tactical precision, using picks and hammers to shatter glass displays and looting nearly 80% of the store's inventory.

The robbery was marked by its aggressive coordination; while most of the group systematically cleared out gold and diamond displays, other members held a security guard hostage to prevent interference. The crew arrived in a fleet of vehicles and fled the scene simultaneously, splitting up in multiple directions to confuse responding authorities. This maneuver forced Fremont police to pick a single target for pursuit, allowing the majority of the suspects to vanish.

The ensuing high-speed chase involved a black Acura that led officers through residential neighborhoods at speeds reaching 80 mph. The driver frequently swerved into oncoming traffic and ignored stop signs before eventually crashing the vehicle. Following the collision, four suspects—all aged 19 or 20—attempted to escape on foot but were quickly apprehended. Investigators noted that the use of stolen vehicles and switched license plates initially hampered efforts to track the suspects via automated readers.

Federal prosecutors are now examining potential links between this June 2025 raid and a strikingly similar robbery that occurred three months later in San Ramon. In that instance, a large crew employed nearly identical tactics to steal $1.5 million worth of jewelry. While four individuals remain in custody for the Fremont heist, a massive manhunt continues for the remaining suspects involved in what authorities describe as a sophisticated retail theft ring.
