Harvard graduate student workers strike over low pay, lagging behind MIT, Stanford peers

Thousands of graduate student workers at Harvard University launched a strike on April 21, 2026, marking a significant escalation in a year-long labor dispute over compensation and workplace protections. The walkout, organized by the Harvard Graduate Students Union–UAW, comes at a critical time in the academic calendar, just as undergraduates prepare for final exams.

The central point of contention is a perceived wage gap between Harvard and its elite peers. Union leaders point out that while some Harvard teaching fellows earn as little as $26,300 annually, student workers at neighboring MIT and Stanford University can earn upward of $60,000. To bridge this divide, the union is demanding a base salary of $55,000 for all graduate workers, along with hourly rates of $25 and annual raises tied to inflation.

Harvard administrators have pushed back against the "underpaid" narrative, arguing that their graduate students are among the best-compensated in the country. The university emphasizes that most union members receive a comprehensive package—including tuition grants and fully subsidized health insurance—valued at over $425,000 over five years. In negotiations, the university has offered a 10% increase in salaried rates over the next four years, a proposal the union has rejected as insufficient.

The dispute extends beyond direct pay to include broader social and legal protections. Union members are seeking the right to third-party representation in cases of workplace harassment and discrimination, as well as the establishment of an emergency fund for legal support and paid leave for international students navigating visa-related procedures.

This strike follows 23 unsuccessful bargaining sessions held since March 2025. While the two sides have reached agreements on minor issues like workspace conditions, nearly two dozen major provisions remain unresolved. Union President Sara Speller characterized the strike as a "last resort," arguing that the world’s wealthiest university has a moral obligation to ensure its workers do not live in financial precarity.

The impact of the walkout is already being felt across the Cambridge campus, with several classes canceled or moved to virtual formats. This is the third time the union has gone on strike since its inception in 2018, following previous labor actions in 2019 and 2021. As the university enters the busy month of May, both sides remain deadlocked, with the union insisting that a fair contract is the only way to restore normal academic operations.
