Malaysia ride-hailing drivers’ income hit by fewer airport trips amid Middle East conflict

Ride-hailing drivers in Malaysia are facing a dual financial squeeze as the conflict in the Middle East ripples through the local economy. Full-time operators, who typically rely on high-fare airport transfers to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for a significant portion of their revenue, are reporting a sharp decline in demand. This drop follows widespread international flight disruptions and airspace closures that began in late February, with major carriers like Malaysia Airlines suspending key routes through March and April.

The loss of these long-distance trips has forced many drivers to work longer hours within the city to compensate for a roughly 20% dip in earnings. While robust domestic travel has provided a temporary cushion, the transition to shorter city trips is less efficient; drivers like 42-year-old Ahmad and others noted that they are now spending more time in heavy traffic and consuming more fuel for lower individual fares.

Compounding the loss of income is the rising cost of operations. Geopolitical tensions have already begun to push up global energy prices, directly impacting the net profit of drivers who typically spend between RM1,200 and RM1,600 per month on petrol. Industry advocates, including leaders from Gabungan eHailing Malaysia and the Grab Drivers Malaysia Association, warn that if fuel costs continue to climb without a corresponding adjustment in fare structures or driver incentives, profit margins will become unsustainably thin.

Looking ahead, the driver community remains in a state of cautious observation. While the current impact is primarily felt by those specialized in airport transfers, there is a growing concern that broader economic shifts—such as a return to remote work or online learning to save on fuel—could trigger a more widespread collapse in demand. For now, most drivers are absorbing the increased costs and reduced margins, waiting to see if regional stability returns before the April travel season begins.
