I couldn't wait to vote at 18 and considered myself a liberal Democrat. I grew up in a conservative house, and my dad was a hardcore Republican.
He fought in Vietnam, Catholic, worked at the local steel mill and later retired from General Motors.
My mother always labeled herself as an independent but leaned towards Republican principles. She never seemed to agree with the Democrats.
I always voted Democratic. When Obama was running, he talked about hope and change, and gave excellent speeches about bringing us together.
It took me a long time to change but it happened around 2015. I listened to speeches and did research on my own. I started listening to my dad and what I finally realized was shocking to me.
I learned not to trust the media because I saw how they twisted things. I realized how hypocritical Hollywood and the left were. The Democrats were the "do as I say and not as I do" party.
The second I said I was voting for Trump and posted conservative statements on Facebook, I was called a racist.
I lost both friends and clients of my small business. I grew up in a huge minority city, Cleveland, and I definitely want equality for everyone. That includes gay people, and I will never change my views on that.
Nevertheless, a number of friends abandoned me. I still don't understand how people can be so blind to what is happening. I walked away from the Democratic Party and I have never regretted my decision. I once had visions of the Democratic Party being like JFK, but that party no longer exists.
It's terrifying. Moderate to conservative Democrats were abandoned and now the Bernie Sanders wing is in control. People like Ben Shapiro and other conservative commentators have truly awaken me. They speak the truth and opened my eyes and ears.
Walking Away from the Democrats was the right decision because l want our nation to succeed.
