I know a Vietnamese refugee who self learned English from "Nguyen Ba Khon English-Vietnamese Dictionary" and "English For Today books 1-4" in a Pulao Bidong refugee camp during his 8-month stay there. He was one of the top students in the level-7 learning English classes that the United Nations High Commission of Refugee (UNHCR) provided to refugees in the Army-style tents. Before leaving the refugee camp, he worked as an interpreter for the US delegation in interpreting, translating and helping Vietnamse refugees during the interviews.
He said, "I had to write the English words on sands, to erase them and to re-write them again so I could learn and remember. Paper was scarce even I have used all pieces of paper from the food cans up. That's life in the refugee camp that 48-thousand Vietnamese including me have gone through!"
That is the proof of self-learning!
And lastly who can guess what year that was?? (Hint: the year that Pulao Bidong had the most Vietnamese boat people arrived!, and the Sick Bay just began to build)
