Old  United States Of Americ Icon Đập thủy điện lớn nhất nước Mỹ Iron Gate sắp bị đập bỏ

MSN reported that the project to demolish the Iron Gate hydroelectric dam (Iron Gate) on the Klamath River in Northern California, USA began implementation in 2022. For more than 100 years, the Klamath River is the most important commodity for fish. back in America, it was blocked by dams from moving.

According to the BBC, it's hard to talk about how important the fisheries are to the Yuroks who have lived for millennia in rural Northern California. However, this livelihood declined in the decades after the Klamath River, which flowed through tribal territory, was blocked to build a hydroelectric dam. But now, after years of intense negotiations, Yurok's luck has come, with the project to dismantle the largest dam in American history greenlighted.

Klamath River Renewal Corporation - the non-profit organization tasked with overseeing the demolition - demonstrated how to dismantle the Iron Gate Dam. Accordingly, the entire reservoir will flow through the old channel tunnel of the dam. After the diversion tunnel is clear and reinforced with concrete, the dam doors will be opened.

The 72 million cubic meter wall of water behind the dam was gradually drained to prevent floods downstream. The steel plates piled up along the top of the dam together with the reservoirs under the dam were removed.

Millions of kilograms of compacted rock and gravel (whose core is waterproof clay) are removed by the excavator, 7,500 cubic meters of rock are moved per day, then increased to 16,000 cubic meters per day.

Excavators and excavators break up the upstream dyke, prevent floods by digging a series of trenches into the rock. Demolition of tunnels, power houses, other architectural works with hydraulic breakers, hoes, drills, blasting.

The goal is that the Klamath River will be clear by the end of 2023. When all is done, it will replace topsoil, then plant native grasses, trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.

Why must the dam be removed?
Although hydroelectricity is considered "clean", the dams are still not environmentally friendly.

Yurok Tribal Vice President Frankie Myers - who has been at the forefront of the fight to dismantle dams on the Klamath River since 2002 - said: “For the people of Yurok, the battle to dismantle dams is not just about the environment - It's our war for survival. "

The Klamath River was once home to the third largest salmon species in America - adult salmon will swim upstream, returning to the home river to spawn. Now, the amount of fish returned is only a small amount compared to before.

Dams built on the Klamath River have been identified as one of the reasons behind the drop in salmon populations.

A total of eight hydroelectric dams were built on the river from the early 1900s until 1962. Their presence caused dramatic changes in salmon populations on Klamath and elsewhere.

"Whenever you build a dam on a river it always has terrible effects: It cuts the flow into two completely separate parts" - BBC quoted Michael Belchik, aquatic biologist. Senior Yurok clan and tribal member who has decades of experience in recovering fish stocks, explains.

The reservoirs behind the dams are also responsible for a significant accumulation of toxic algae - they thrive in warm, nutrient-rich stagnant waters. In large enough quantities, it will be harmful to human health.

The solution that Yurok and other tribal coalitions and environmental organizations have long supported is to dismantle four of the eight dams downstream of the Klamath River.

After tough negotiations, PacifiCorp (the company that operates these dams) and 40 stakeholders, including California tribes and state governments, signed an agreement in 2010.

According to Klamath River Renewal Corporation, the simultaneous demolition of four dams with a total height of 125 meters makes it the largest dam dismantling project in American history.

This is also considered the most expensive project, up to nearly 450 million USD.

As a result, 640km of river flow will be restored back to trout habitat and other migratory species such as rainbow trout and Pacific rock grouper.
