Two Vietnamese arrested on a cannabis farm in the north of England claim to be victims of modern slavery.

Phan Tuan, 22, and Nam Van, 41, were arrested in a bedroom on a cannabis farm in a large industrial park in Bradford, north of England, on April 15. The building has 13 rooms, renovated into a place to grow cannabis, separated from the outside by a sliding iron door, the electrical system is connected directly to the underground cable.

Two Vietnamese men plead guilty to producing cannabis, claiming to be victims of modern slavery. Prosecutor Mehran Nassiri said Nam Van was jailed for 12 May 2019 for producing cannabis, in addition to the room where the cannabis growing room, the building also has a drying place, with hundreds of trees being hung up, ready to be packed. and distribution. Both defendants had cell phones, with Tuan having £ 105 on him. There was a large freezer containing meat, beer and empty cans that were thrown at the scene.

Neither of the two are locked in the house, says Nassiri, so they can leave if they want to. The owner of the building said he rented the house to a man but has not yet received any rent. The amount of cannabis seized at the scene was 92.07 kg, worth £ 800,000 ($ 1.12 million).

Nam Van claimed he was taken to the UK by long-term trafficking gangs in 2017. After serving his prison term in 2019, he was kidnapped by the old gang and sent to the farm to work.

Tuan, who has never had a criminal record, said he was taken to a cannabis farm by a trafficker group in Scotland, then taken with Van to the Bradford facility. Both are in debt in Vietnam.

John Bottomley, Tuan's defense attorney, said the client had to sleep on a thin mat on the farm.

"He may not be trafficked, but he has certainly been exploited," said Bottomley.

Van's lawyer Saf Salam said his client was also exploited. Anthony Kelbirck, who took the testimony, declared both Van and Tuan to play the role "in a giant line".

Bradford court on April 15 sentenced to 31 months in prison for Tuan and three years in prison for Van. Van has to serve a longer sentence because he has a criminal record.

In recent months, the UK has tried many cases involving cannabis growers. Many of the defendants claimed to be foreign citizens and were tricked into Britain by trafficking groups and forced to work on farms.
