COVID-19 vaccine of AstraZeneca and joint venture Pfizer (USA) - BioNTech (Germany) is still effective against two variants of SARS-CoV-2 first detected in India, Delta and Kappa. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford and published in the journal Cell on April 23, thereby encouraging countries to step up vaccination programs to prevent the COVID-19 epidemic.

To reach these conclusions, the researchers tested the ability of antibodies in blood samples from people who had received two doses of the vaccine to neutralize the Delta and Kappa variants.

Last week, the UK's Public Health England (PHE) also confirmed that Pfizer Inc's COVID-19 vaccines - BioNTech and AstraZeneca are still highly effective in protecting vaccinated people (more than 90%) against no hospitalized due to infection with Delta variant.

In addition to studying the effectiveness of existing vaccines against COVID-19, the Oxford University scientists are also analyzing cases of reinfection. The results of data analysis show that patients with COVID-19 due to Beta variant infection first detected in South Africa and Gamma variant in Brazil after being treated are still at high risk of reinfection with Delta variant.

In contrast, the Alpha variant, or B117, was first discovered in the UK and has the ability to protect people from the disease against the risk of reinfection with all types of variants. Therefore, Alpha has the potential to become a potential candidate to research and develop a vaccine to prevent new variants more thoroughly.
