A lot of people (including some of Trump's gullible supporters) wondered:

Why Trump backed down on "One China" policy? He even went further saying that he'd honor it and leaving Taiwan out in the cold.

Why? Why he talked big but acted weak on this issue?

My take on this is he is planning on making some deals with China and leveling the playing field in trades (with Taiwan as a negotiation chip on the table).

OR

Trump is just a paper tiger too when dealing with mighty China.
