Man dies after trying online-recommended salted lemon and sunbathing ‘cure’ for hypertension

A tragic incident in Vietnam has highlighted the lethal dangers of medical misinformation after a 47-year-old man died from a catastrophic stroke. The patient, who had a well-documented history of hypertension, chose to abandon his physician-prescribed blood pressure medication in favor of a "detox" regimen he discovered on social media. This alternative approach involved consuming large quantities of concentrated salted lemon water and engaging in prolonged sunbathing, based on the unverified belief that the body could heal itself by "expelling toxins" through sweat.

According to Dr. Doan Du Manh of the Vietnam Vascular Disease Association, the patient’s health collapsed on December 10. He suffered a paroxysmal hypertensive crisis—a violent and sudden spike in blood pressure—that caused a major cerebral blood vessel to rupture. Despite his family’s attempts to get him to a hospital, the man was pronounced dead before he could be admitted. His family later revealed that he had been convinced by online groups that "Western medicine" was inherently harmful and that natural methods were superior for long-term health.

Medical experts have identified a "lethal synergy" of three factors that led to this outcome. First, the abrupt cessation of his medication triggered "rebound hypertension," a condition where blood vessels constrict rapidly when no longer supported by stabilizers. Second, the high sodium content in the salted lemon water caused significant water retention, forcing the heart to work harder and increasing the internal pressure on already weakened arterial walls. Finally, the dehydration and elevated heart rate caused by excessive sunbathing pushed his cardiovascular system to its breaking point.

Dr. Manh emphasized that hypertension is a chronic condition that requires lifelong, consistent management to prevent fatal complications like myocardial infarction or hemorrhagic strokes. He warned that many patients become complacent when they "feel healthy," leading them to trust "word-of-mouth" fads or extreme diets over scientifically proven treatments. The medical community maintains that there is no substitute for prescribed medication in maintaining stable vitals for those with high blood pressure.

In the wake of this tragedy, healthcare professionals are urging the public to remain skeptical of "detox" trends found on social media and to never alter a treatment plan without consulting a specialist. They stress that a truly healthy lifestyle involves a low-salt diet, regular exercise, and stress management, all of which should complement—not replace—professional medical care. Families are also advised to be vigilant for warning signs such as severe headaches or sudden weakness, which require immediate emergency intervention.
