At a press conference on April 6, WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris revealed the reason why the organization did not support the implementation of the Covid-19 vaccine passport at this time.

"At this point, we do not want vaccine passports to be a requirement for immigration because there is currently no certainty that vaccines prevent infection," Ms. Harris said. In addition, the WHO spokesperson stressed that the vaccine passport requirement also raises the question of discrimination against people who have not been vaccinated for some reason.

The US also does not support the vaccine passport at the moment. Speaking to the press yesterday, White House communications secretary Jen Psaki said: "At this point and in the future, the US government does not support a system that requires Americans to have a certified vaccination. There will be no federal immunization databases and no federal program that requires residents to have a single immunization certificate.

Previously, in an interview with Politico on April 5, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a leading US expert on infectious diseases, also said that the government of this country would not implement the vaccine passport model Covid-19. However, according to Mr. Fauci, the federal government can provide guidance, allowing private businesses to implement this model.

The above comment was made in the context of a number of countries moving to deploy the vaccine passport mechanism to open up the economy in the midst of the pandemic. Last month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced proposals for a "vaccine passport" of the European Union (EU). EU vaccine passports will allow citizens of member countries to move freely within the bloc without the need for quarantine.

Meanwhile, Thailand is also considering implementing a vaccine passport, but under the mechanism to reduce the number of quarantine days for foreigners entering from 14 days to 7 days.

Some countries see vaccine passports as an effective tool to safely reopen economies amid the Covid-19 pandemic. However, despite countries accelerating the vaccination program, Covid-19 still boomed, France even had to block the country for the third time.

According to WHO data, in the past week, the world recorded more than 4 million new Covid-19 cases, marking the 6th consecutive week of increase. In which, the Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region had the strongest increase in the number of Covid-19 cases. India recorded the most recent cases, followed by Brazil, the US, Turkey, and France. In the past week, the world recorded more than 71,000 Covid-19 deaths, an increase of 11% from the previous week.

According to Worldometer data, since the outbreak of Covid-19 at the end of 2019, the world has recorded more than 130 million cases of Covid-19, of which nearly 3 million people died.
