A COVID-19 vaccine fund made its debut on June 5 evening in Hanoi, featuring the participation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, officials from the Vietnam Fatherland Front, ministries, sectors, and socio-political organisations, business community representatives and others.

The fund is designed to call on support from all of society, businesses, people inside and outside of the country and international organisations, with the money set to be used to purchase vaccines and to develop Vietnamese vaccines.

In his speech on behalf of the Party, State and Vietnam Fatherland Front, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on all people to join hands in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the occasion, the Vietnamese cabinet leader also expressed his profound thanks to all people, businesses, organizations and individuals at home and abroad for their unanimity and readiness to share difficulties in the COVID-19 battle so that everyone can live in a safe and prosperous nation.

According to Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long, to achieve herd immunity (having at least 75% of the population vaccinated against COVID-19) in a near 100 million population, the nation would require 150 million vaccine doses this year, which may cost over US$1 billion.

At the launching ceremony of the fund, as of 9 p.m on June 5, a total of VND 1,056 billion were raised from individual units.
