Vào khoảng đầu năm 1974, Thiếu Tá Vinh, vợ và 7 người con dọn về sinh sống ở một khu b́nh dân, ngoài ngoại ô vùng Sài G̣n.
Theo một người hàng xóm cho biết. Và sau một thời gian rất ngắn, gia đ́nh của Th/Tá Vinh được sự thông cảm, và quí mến của bà con lối xóm. Người con trai đầu ḷng của Th/Tá Vinh chừng 30 tuổi, Tr/Uy Quân Y, sau khi tốt nghiệp trường Dược (Pharmacist Of medical School), và người con gái út khoảng 15 tuổi.
Gia Đ́nh của Th/Tá Vinh là một gia đ́nh sung sướng, hạnh phúc, nếu Sài G̣n đừng có rơi vào tay bọn Cộng-sản miền Bắc. Theo lời kể lại của hàng xóm về chuyện Th/Tá Vinh, người nắm một chức vụ trong Bộ Cảnh Sát Quốc Gia tại Sài G̣n. Chừng 2 giờ chiều ngày 30 tháng 4 năm 1975, sau khi Tổng Thống Dương Văn Minh ra lệnh buông súng đầu hàng, th́ bà con xung quanh kề cận với gia đ́nh Th/Tá Vinh, nghe vài tiếng súng nổ, xuất phát từ trong nhà của Th/Tá Vinh.
Sau khi thấy không c̣n nguy hiểm, th́ những người lối xóm bước vô trong nhà của Th/Tá Vinh. Họ đă chứng kiến Th/Tá Vinh, vợ, và 7 người con nằm kế bên nhau, trên một chiếc giường, tất cả đều đă chết, do thương tích từ viên đạn xuyên qua thái dương.
Kế bên là bàn ăn, là bữa ăn rất tươm tất. Kế đó là 9 cái ly uống nước trên bàn, mối cái ly đều có dấu vết tích để lại một chất bột màu hồng, đọng lại dưới đáy mỗi cái ly. Có lẽ đây là thuốc ngủ, mà trước đó Th/Tá Vinh đă cho mỗi người trong gia đ́nh uống.
Sau đó tử tự bằng súng lục Colt45. Một cái tủ sắt đă mở sẵn, Th/Tá Vinh đă để lại vài trăm ngàn đồng tiền mặt, tương đương chừng $500 US dollars, cùng với một bức thư ngắn, do chính tay Th/Tá Vinh viết:
“Bà Con mến, Mong Bà Con niệm t́nh tha thứ cho gia đ́nh chúng tôi, bởi v́ chúng tôi không muốn sống dưới chế độ Cộng-sản này.
Nên chúng tôi đă chọn cái chết, và chính cái chết đó, có thể đem lại sự buồn phiền đến với bà con. Xin nhờ bà con báo tin này đến người chị (em) của tôi tên là …, ở …, và dùng số tiền này, để lo chôn cất cho gia đ́nh chúng tôi.
Xin đa tạ Đặng Sĩ Vinh”.
