Người đàn ông Canada gốc Việt Van Du Nguyen đă bị cảnh sát Úc bắt v́ tàng trữ hơn 22kg cocaine ở phía bắc Tây Úc. Ông ta đă bị tuyên án 14 năm, bất chấp việc thẩm phán chấp nhận rằng ông ta sẽ phải đối mặt với khó khăn do bị tách khỏi gia đ́nh.

Cảnh sát đă bắt Van Du Nguyen, người sinh ra ở Việt Nam, vào hồi tháng 5 sau khi ông ta gặp một người đàn ông khác tại khách sạn The Esplanade ở Port Hedland và được đưa cho một vali ma túy trị giá khoảng 20 triệu đô nếu bán ở đường phố.

Nguyen, 60 tuổi, đă nhận tội tàng trữ ma túy với ư định bán hoặc cung cấp và đă bị kết án tại Ṭa án quận Tây Úc vào hôm qua. Thẩm phán Vicki Stewart nói rằng số ma túy này có độ tinh khiết trung b́nh là 82% và giá trị bán buôn hơn 4 triệu đô. Nguyen đă ngồi im lặng và nghe thông dịch viên của ḿnh trong suốt quá tŕnh tố tụng.



Thẩm phán Stewart mô tả Nguyen là một “người chuyển hàng đáng tin cậy” và là “người giữ nhiệm vụ quan trọng” trong mạng lưới phân phối ma túy. “Ông đóng một vai tṛ quan trọng trong một tổ chức ma túy phức tạp”, bà nói. “Ông đă định trở lại Perth với số ma túy đó.”

Thẩm phán Stewart nói rằng ông Nguyen không phải là người sử dụng ma túy nhưng đă tham gia vào đường dây tội phạm v́ lợi ích tài chính cá nhân.

Tuy nhiên, bà cũng lưu ư rằng ông ta đă nhận tội, không có tiền án trước đó và đă tỏ ra hối hận. Ṭa án được biết rằng Nguyen đă chạy trốn khỏi Việt Nam vào năm 1979 và đă ở trong các trại tị nạn trước khi chuyển đến Canada vào năm 1985.

Ông ta đă kết hôn được 40 năm, có 3 người con lớn và một đứa cháu. Thẩm phán Stewart chấp nhận ông Nguyen sẽ gặp khó khăn khi phải xa gia đ́nh và bạn bè của ḿnh, nói rằng ông sẽ “bị tước quyền hỗ trợ của họ”. Tuy nhiên, sự an toàn của cộng đồng và việc ngăn chặn cũng rất quan trọng, bà nói.

Ông Nguyen sẽ phải ngồi tù ít nhất 12 năm, trước khi có thể hội đủ điều kiện để được tạm tha. Ông ta cũng đă được tuyên bố là một kẻ buôn bán ma túy.

22kg cocaine ở đâu chả thấy mà chỉ thấy vài trăm grams cocaine và phần nhiều là cần sa (marijuana) ???
